You want a cosmetology school. Colleges don't offer that. You'll need to look in your phone book and see what is there. Then carefully interview each school. Find out the licensing laws in your state and about the accredation of the school to make sure they are licensed and properely accredited. Contact the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints against the schools you decide to enroll in to make your final choice. Yes, this is a lot of research, but it is necessary. You don't want a worthless certification. Some schools don't comply with state laws. Also find out about what it will cost to take any state certification and licensing exams, and when they are offered.

Pivot Point is a nationally recognized cosmotology school. One of the best. See if they have a school in your area. Programs can take a year or two, depending on your course of study.

You have to got to a trade school. My sister went and I think it was less than 2 years. You can make money if you are good with people and good at what you do for them.

The people I know in cosmetology make very good money. I think it's harder if you own your own store and have to pay for the overhead out of your income than it is if you are say someone who does hair/makeup for model shoots, etc. But, they still make good money. I know 3 that are doing very well with their salons (different salons) in major cities. My aunt has done wonderfully well with hers (small town, little competition). She raised 3 kids by herself on just her income from it (she had her business in her house, though, which worked great for her as she was home when the kids got home, etc.)

As to school, it's not that long. Usually 1-2 years. You can either go to a community college for the training, or can go to a school sponsored by one of the major retailers of hair products. Either way you will be required to then pass a licensure test before you can go to work.

I think they are either 9 month or 18 month programs. Look up cosmetology schools in the phone book for those in your area,.

Aveda, Paul Mitchell, Scott Lewis, are some I know of.

Technical Colleges (county or municipal) often have these types of programs too.

You should start a website for your store. Have an online catalog. Printing is expensive and distribution is even more expensive.

YES ~ you make good money in cosmetology. Interview some of the stylists or cosmetologists in your area for their stories on how they got started.

Good Luck.

I think you can get all you need for cosmotology in less than 2 years. And if you want a catalog and a magazine that will cost a lot. So get your store first and make some money and then try your other ideas. Rome wasn't built in a day. International Academy is a good place to learn. Their toll free number is 1-888-893-3636. Remember this: It's nice to be important but it's important to be nice.

I went for cosmetology, it was a 1 year program full time (9am-4pm) or 2 years part time which was about 4 hours a day. Cosmetology can make awesome money, it's all about your clients...how well they like what you do, and if you can keep them coming back. I'm not sure of the area you are in. Look in your phone book under cosmetology and it should list schools in your area. Most community colleges offer it now. Don't pay too much for it though. I made a mistake of going to Empire....and they are extremely expensive and you get the same thing you would at a cheaper school. Average is about $6000 in my area to enroll in the school.
