Black Americans and Eurocentric Beauty Standrads?

I was in the local food store picking up some things for my mom and I was in a long long line and I was looking at some magazines like Jet, Ebony, Essence, Vibe Vixen, King, XXL, and Sista2Sista. I was looking at the women inside the hair ads and some of the models and celebirties and I noticed that most of the Black models actresses all looked the smae: they had light skin and long and striaght relaxed hair. What is up? I wrote a essay about this for my African American studies class about how Black people prefer light skin over dark skin. I myself, I have very "African" features, I have twists in my hair, chocolate skin, and a hourglass body. I'm just staring to appreaciate my Afro-latino hertage and my skin color. It's hard because there are barely any dark skinned actresses and you always see dark skinned women in Black movies and vidoes potrayed as the villain or the hoe. I'm tried of it. why can't the dark skinned girl be the love interest of the pretty girl? Why??

This is very true.

I was born in the 70s and grew up in the 80s and there were many more shades and feautures then...

But now...fuhgetaboutit....

It is very sad...if more of us did what we did in the 1970s and 1980s and wrote to these companies, explaining that *ahem* black women do come in more than one shade, then it would stop again....

But many women of darker hue even believe in these standards....my mama and me and my sisters would write in (along with thousands of conscious sisters) and we are light.

It is ridiculous because all of us would be our natural dark hue except for miscegenation

Have a good day.

Because they have brown hair. I'm convinced that you have to be blond and blue eyed to be the good girl. Also, movies and stuff are trying to make as much money as possible and dark skinned Americans are definitely the miniority, so they target the bigger audience.

Dark people are discouraged. There has to exist a black beautiful woman which will change everyones's mind set. That will encorage more dark skinned, social darwinism society we live in.

thats a good point... Honestly I think women who apreciate their african heritage are much more stunning that the ones who try to down size it.....I have an african american friend who is very dark...I hate it when she straightens her hair, and I let her know it, when she leaves it curly i always compliment how nice it looks on her....beauty is always better natural.

I learned about this in my Womens Studies class. I personally think that beautiful women are the ones who can love the way God made them! I knew alot of women from Africa when I lived in NY, and they were very beautiful and dark skinned. (They also wore minimal makeup.) Most of all they were happy which shines through as true beauty! I don't know why the media is so cruel to natural looks. It is sad.

Yea I feel the same way when I see those magazines. I think black women are the most beautiful girls on the planet.

It used to be white women were the standard of beauty. Now you see so many black women (I'll admit with lighter skin) portrayed as beautiful as well. I think light-skinned black women are more beautiful than white women personally. So, my point is, I think our standards of beauty are being expanded all the time. At least we have some variety now vs. just the same old boring white women as the standard of beauty. We need a major reevaluation of what we consider beautiful in this country and in the fashion industry in general.

yes, in america blonde and blue are the only words the entertainment industry really wants to hear. the lighter the better to them although that really sucks!

Take it from someone a little bit older -- don't get caught up in this hype. Your standard of beauty shouldn't come from a magazine or a movie. This is an old debate that will never be resolved. Love who you are and respect the fact that everyone is free to do what they want with their body. I'm also African-American from Detroit.

why is it so hard for YOU PEOPLE to understand that no one, not even blacks, like black rashy nappy hair and crunchy nappy heads?

Black Americans and Eurocentric Beauty Standrads?

It's a third question about black and white in a same day which I have passed through. i am an indian , and as I saw in movies, I thought western beauty std. is only a beautiful figure and nice height but there is a big issue of black and white there. But I like black complexion people, because they have very healthy and younger skin which whites don't have, they look always 60 yrs. old.

Notice more darked-skinned, beautiful black women on

TV movies as of late -- makes the programs seem truer

to life. Hopefully, the movie media will catch up soon.

television...shoves a certain standard of beauty down our throats....

That goes back to some research I did on the inter-race relations of Black America. Ever since slavery, Blacks have considered light skin as the equivalent of being better than your darker counterparts. It's a ridiculous theory that can not be proven nor controlled.

White women are the most attractive group of women in the world.Deal with it.
